Ashtanga Yoga: A Counted Primary Series
Limited Capacity seats available

It was a long time before the first western students of Pattabhi Jois realized that the Sanskrit words he was saying through class were numbers! Ekam inhale, Dve exhale, Trini inhale … their teacher was counting their movements with breath. You see, that's not how they originally learned to practice. Because traditionally and still today, the series is taught individually by a teacher, with each pose allowed to be fully developed before being taught the next. We call this self-practice or the Mysore method. But there is enormous benefit for both mind and body by practicing the movements in a led counted style, emphasizing the vinyasa. The intention is to lead students toward a more balanced practice through a series they are already familiar with. And why this class is intended for students who have had exposure to the Ashtanga practice, though do not necessarily need to be proficient.

Unpacking Chaturanga: Mechanics of a Misunderstood Asana
Limited Capacity seats available

Maybe the most ubiquitous and yet still mystifying of poses in the modern day yoga class, chaturanga has garnered quite the reputation. It's a heat builder, it's a strength based posture, it's dangerous, it's useless, it's crucial, it's what makes a vinyasa flow… It's the shoulder shredder, the widow maker… Chaturanga can be a phenomenal opportunity for full body engagement, energetic unfolding and a physical manifestation of resolve and attention. Lets reclaim this shape and learn to work with, not around it. In this workshop we will break down the elements of a successful and healthy asana. We will learn the biomechanics of the shape, technical drills and warm ups, modifications and how to truly embody this complicated asana. Some movement, some discussion, lots of opportunity for questions and knowledge bombs. Don't worry. We won't be in a low pushup for 90min.

Learn to: Use the hand as a map of the entire body, allowing adjustments to the placement of the entire body by sensing where the weight falls into the hand. Use your legs! The sign of a complete handstand beginner is usually that the legs are dull and lifeless or flailing. Learning to use the legs well lightens the load on the upper body allowing for a lighter and more versatile handstand. Proper wrist angles for a variety of handstands types. People often dive headfirst into handstands and eventually have to back away from them because they overstress their wrists. Develop the range and stability in the wrists with my magic wrist techniques. Shoulder and Rib Cage Placement. Differentiation. Hip placement. Pelvic tilt. Foot articulation. Advanced Charging Practice is great way to explore some of the more advanced postures that Sri Dharma Mittra has been practicing and teaching for years, as well as to experience how well they pair with guided meditation in Shavasana. The class will begin with the chanting of Om and dedication of the practice, then move into Sun Salutations to warm up the body followed by about 70-minutes of practice of the main and most efficient yoga postures. If one holds the poses long enough, there is often a chance to taste meditation right there in the Asana. The class will conclude with a deep experience of short-form Yoga Nidra. When we really relax, a great amount of healing can take place both on the physical and subtle levels. This class will serve as a chance to experience the Dharma Yoga method and will constitute a complete practice of yoga.
