I've been leading this class at festivals for 5 years, and I can't retire it... because it's just soooo good. We start with 40 minutes of Yin poses to wind you down from your afternoon of vinyasa and other yang pursuits, to prepare your body for... 20 minutes of slow, steady Pranayama to tone your mind for… 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra, full body yogic relaxation. Ahhhh… Full system reboot.

Are you being duped by your nervous system's ancient wiring? Our Western way of living too often wakes up the ever-present fight, flight or freeze nature of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Sometimes we're not even aware we've ignited the SNS which can create agitation over the long term, awakening the endocrine system -- releasing hormones like adrenalin and cortisol -- to combat the "foe." Bombarded too often we become susceptible to a myriad of issues, including frustration and fatigue. What if all that foe-fighting makes the art of deceleration, of mindful pause, elusive? In this deeply tranquil YIN practice you'll learn more about how to access the key to the other 50% of your nervous system, the PNS through poses and breath awareness. Fire: Yin Yoga & The Five Elements

Using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)'s 5-Element “mutual generation cycle” as our guide we’ll visit a sequence of YIN Yoga poses & breath to connect with characteristics of each element: Earth. Metal. Water. Wood. Fire. Awareness for this generating energy (think “birthing”) of one element to another aids us in becoming more physically & mentally attuned to this cycle, respectful of the ever-unfolding continuum of Life. With the summer season blooming we'll pay particular homage to the FIRE element's four meridian channels – heart, small intestine, pericardium and triple heater – enhancing joy and growth with coolness to balance the rising heat. How these elements interweave with everything outside & within us can bring fresh insights into our experiences of Yoga while enhancing our inter-dependent connectedness.

Slow-paced and methodical, a YIN Yoga practice addresses our "stimulation junkie" tendencies activated by the amp'd up world around us. The practice is "medicine" in several ways. We choose to invite more spaciousness within the reservoir of the body's deeper layers – physically, emotionally, spiritually. We deeply decelerate. We unravel the tensions we carry bit by bit. We feel and acknowledge the truth of our cranky body parts, exhaustion and worries...alchemizing these distractions through YIN's four pillars: Edge. Awareness. Stillness. Time. Like to move fast and furious? A YIN Yoga practice can either be a nemesis or new-found oasis but don't let YIN's slowness fool you!  Lots happens in subtle realms as we hang out in YIN poses. We make room for the nervous system, circulatory, digestive and hormonal/immune system! We rebuild the body stronger and more resilient while stimulating hydration within the deep connective tissues. We leave calm...grounded...observant...flexible. Medicine.

“Slack Tide”: Yin Yoga and The Edge

Slack tide is a short period of time in a body of tidal water when the water is completely unstressed, and therefore no movement either way in the tidal stream, and occurs before the direction of the tidal stream reverses. We will practice YIN Yoga to locate that "unstressed place" within our body using Taoism's YIN and YANG polarities and focused on one of YIN Yoga's main pillars of practice: The Edge.. With care and compassion we'll develop greater awareness for edge in each pose and in every breath, inviting exploration of the body's deeper connective tissues to induce our own metaphoric "slack tide." We'll hold poses generally 3-5 minutes neutralizing any struggles in the major intersections of our body where energy tends to get obstructed -- neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles – leveraging traction and compression to improve and nurture our own tidal ebb and flow.
